To all current and former Crusaders, and our supporters,
It is with great sorrow that the Club announces the passing of its founder.
Ian Brahne, one of our two co-founders and first team Captain, from back in 1990, died peacefully on May 15th at his home in Auckland at the age of 64. A player tackled far too early. He had been battling pancreatic cancer for the last couple of years, and is survived by his wife Kyoko, also a key person – in her capacity as a manager – in establishing the Tokyo Crusaders Rugby Football Club, and their son Alex.
Ian`s passion was key in those early days of the club. His on-field commitment was also an inspiration, and we are sure that our Old Boys have many memories, not least the famous quote, shouted with irritation, that went something like “Tape me up. I’m going back on.” It was great to have Ian on our side as we hit the dusty pitches of Tokyo. The Tokyo Crusaders RFC meant a lot to Ian and it showed in his drive and persistence, along with the other founders and players, to get it established. We have no doubt of his pride in seeing it still going some 35 years later.
Below is a link to information on the funeral, Friday, May 23rd, where tributes can be left. It would be a nice touch if Cru members would take the time to let Kyoko and Alex know that Ian is remembered.
